THE MONSTER CALLED RAPE

I guess that my difficulty in being able to write about women related themes in my writings stemmed from the fact that when I had grown to the level of self-realisation, my mother who could properly guide me through the mountainous range of knowing and appreciating the opposite sex was no more of this earth, or perhaps because I never grew with a female sibling, or even maybe, because I grew up in a conventional Nigerian family , ferociously grounded in morals, where it would amount to a taboo for a man to ever think of stooping so low to the level of a woman (Infact, God help you if Papa should as much as catch you innocently daydreaming about the opposite sex).

I had methodically embarked on a joyous voyage of Thank-God-I-Am-A-Man themed writings. A moment of introspection had awakened in me and opened my eyes to the wonders and amazing world of being a woman. A task which I will not set out here, but suffice it to say that being a woman is a very beautiful experience. That sadly seems to be on a sharp decline as evinced from the various acts of violence against women. Questions after question continually barraged my mind. What if my future wife was someone who had undergone the damaging and traumatising effects of being raped? What if I am nowhere to be found tomorrow, what will be the fate of my future daughters in a world of prejudiced values against women? What if my only sister, had she been alive, grows to become a victim of rape? Worst of all, what if I had been born a girl, who could tell, if I wouldn't have experienced such traumatic moments of being dehumanised and downgraded? As these unanswered questions kept nagging at me, I found myself invariably departing from mainstream Collins; trademark Arikor, who naturally is stone-hearted when it comes to matters concerning the opposite sex. Because whichever way you decide to look at it, the issue of rape touches us all in one way or the other. And then an inner voice told me it was time to wear the shoes of rape victims so as to feel how it pinches; it was time to lend my voice to the dastardly act of rape. This monster called rape.

Shout Out to a Survivor By Ejura Salihu

I should have written this a few weeks ago but circumstances delayed this article, I hope its not late to pay tribute to an icon of strength, the survivor we all know too well, Late Maya Angelou. I would not claim to be an avid reader of her poems and her works but I love all the ones I have read and I can't deny the sheer strength that oozes through each masterpiece. I feel a sense of pride reading her struggles and survival. Raped at a tender age of 8, she lost her voice for a while but when she found her voice and spoke, the world listened till the end of her life and we are all still listening.

Not all victims of rape find their voice immediately, most need time to heal internally before speaking out. I use this medium to encourage all victims of abuse wherever they may be, please heal, take your time, but when your find your strength and voice, don't let it be bullied into silence. You deserve justice, you deserve to be heard. The culture of rape can only be broken if the culture of silence is broken.

Justice For Victims of Rape by Bukola Otuyemi

Majority of Nigerians staunchly believe that rape victims never get justice and we at Stand To End Rape Initiative (S.T.E.R) always do our best to convince them otherwise. One can hardly fault them completely given some past records, but the fact remains that determination in seeking justice with the precise evidences are what makes a success out of such cases. The path to seeking justice for rape victims are never smooth nor easy to tow, but tow them we must if we want to put an end to these heinous crimes against humanity.

When I read this article (Read HERE) in the news, I was overwhelmed with mixed feelings. A 45-year-old man had raped a 10-year-old boy horrifically, in Jigawa State. Firstly, I was sad at the plight of the young victim and concerned about him getting the right treatment and counselling to overcome the trauma. I'm not quite sure how accessible and efficient rape counselling centres are up North.

Domestic Violence Needs More Attention, Says Governor Fashola

During the 12th anniversary of Ms Funmi Iyanda's "Change A Life Programme,"which held at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Network centre on Victoria Island; Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola stated that domestic violence needs more attention. He further explained the need for state police to shift focus from typical social vices such as kidnapping and armed robbery, to tackling grievous issues like domestic violence on women and children. Fashola also highlighted that rape cases are not usually reported by victims, as police lack adequate investigative mechanisms and legal provisions to apprehend/prosecute rapists. This and many more he said his administration will focus on for the new year. Read more after the cut.

#Katsina: Sex Offenders to Get Life Imprisonment

We are sure you all have seen this. We just couldn't hold back on our excitement so we decided to post it. News reaching us is that, Katsina State House of Assembly have recently amended a section of the Katsina State Penal Code Law, which states that rapists/sex offenders are due to serve life imprisonment.

Nigerian News Desk reports:
The Katsina State House of Assembly has passed a law that prescribes life imprisonment for those found guilty of sexual assault.

The assembly, which amended Section 283 of Katsina State Penal Code Law, Cap 96 of 1991, stated that those found guilty of rape will serve life imprisonment and those found guilty of lesser sexual offences will serve terms of not less than 14 years in jail together with N50 000 fine.

The amendment also requires the offender to pay compensation to the victim.

Earlier before the passage of the bill, the sponsor, Rabiu Idris from Funtua Local Government, had said that the amendment was to ensure that rapists received severe punishment to serve as deterrent to others.

He stressed that the measure became necessary in view of rampant cases of rape in the state.

The Kastina State house of Assembly Speaker, Ya’u Gwajogwajo, directed the legal department of the house to prepare a clean copy of the law and forward it to the state governor for assent.

Earlier, the house had passed a law, which was signed by the governor, prohibiting homosexuality, lesbianism and sexual harassment in the state.

The law prescribed 14 years imprisonment on conviction and N10 000 liable for offenders.

The 'I had sex with her before I could shout ‘blood of Jesus’ Story: What Has Been Done?

Don't crucify me yet, I know it's old news! But errrmmm seriously, this story has been on a low key ever since! I just thought to refresh our minds on the possibility that nothing is being done about this issue -- typical right!

Remember the story of Bishop Chibuike Nwabueze, the Chairman of All Bishops in Rivers State, who was arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl and was paraded by the state Police Command. The Bishop claimed hypnosis in his confession – made before newsmen – adding that a colleague in the Lord set him up at the church where the incident occurred.

What then do you think about this one? It has nothing to do with blood naa! I can't even laugh! Please leave a comment :)

According to Premium Times, the police force says it’s a self-cleaning institution.
The Nigeria Police Force has frowned at reports that it is shielding the officer who allegedly raped a two-year-old girl, insisting that he had been dismissed from the force.

Video: Sexually Abused Children in Light of Hope Orphanage Cry Out for Justice!

Please click HERE to watch the video

Children in Light of Hope Orphanage are being sexually abused by the Director of the Orphanage (who they call 'Pastor,' but at this point, we don't care!) Mr Atunde. Two children from the orphanage reported that Mr Atunde had sexually abused them for more than 3 years. The man was arrested and the children taken out of the orphanage. The case is presently in court, but it seems like nothing is being done. Barely two weeks after Project Alert, an organization advocating against violence against women and girls, took the girls in their shelter, the Ogun State government returned the girls back to the (abusive) shelter on some baseless reasons. Mr Tunde, who sexually abuses these girls in his orphanage has been granted bail (by who?) and is now punishing these girls for speaking out. This sexual abuser walks free, while the Ogun State Government Ministry of Women Affairs is quite about the case. Project Alert has asked us to help with creating more awareness about the case and we implore you to help us in this fight for JUSTICE! Please join us in screaming out loud on Facebook, Twitter and in the media to ensure that justice is served. Suggestions on plausible tactics to use will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

We totally agree with the Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers, Bayelsa chapter, Mrs Pere Egbuson, who has urged rape victims to reject-out-of court settlement. We believe that out-of-court settlement is not only doing rape survivors no justice, it buys their voice.

Egbuson made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa.

Funny! Man Fails to Get an Erection to Rape Woman, Apologises to Her Saying It’s His First Time

Apparently jealousy prompt some men to rape or commit murder. Well in this guy's case after seeing his girlfriend with another man, he just wanted to revenge by raping another woman. Unluckily for him for, his manhood failed him, he just couldn't rape the women. Here is why...

According to IReporters, after seeing his girlfriend with another man, Sudan-born Khalid Abdullah cornered a stranger in an alley and held a blade to her neck in a jealousy fuelled assault.

Khalid told the woman, in her 30s, that he ‘needed s*x’ before putting his hand over her mouth and telling her to keep quiet.

However, Abdullah, 35, was unable to carry out the rape and told her: ‘It’s my first time, I’m sorry.’
