Nigeria's First Lady Seeks Stiff Penalties against Rape

It has been reported that the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has called for stiff penalties, backed by effective laws for perpetrators of sexual violence against women.

Mrs Jonathan spoke in Paris, France on Friday, at the advocacy meeting on sexual violence against women. During the debate of child marriage in Nigeria, it can be recalled that Mrs Jonathan kept mute, but it's great to know she advocates against sexual #ViolenceagainstWomen *grin.*

The meeting was hosted by the First Lady of France, Ms Valerie Trierweiler, on the sideline of the Elysee Summit for Peace and Security in Africa holding in Paris.

#Nigeria: Senators Seek Stringent Punishment for Rapists

I was really excited when I got information that the Senate yesterday advocated for stiffer punishment on perpetrators of sexual assault as the Sexual Offence Bill, which was sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu passed the second reading.

This is a great step in the right direction and it's great to see that some senators see the need to enact a law that will deal with sexual violence in Nigeria. In her remarks, senator Anyanwu, said her bill spoke volume of the high rate of immorality in the society and demanded the creation of a unit within the Nigerian Police Force (that will hopefully function) where trained professionals would ensure the preservation of the rights of humanity. She urged the Senate to support the passage of the law to protect women.

What Do You Think About Punishing Rapists This Way?

Different people have suggested several punishments rapists should be faced with. Some have said they don't support blood shed, while others have said death by hanging/shooting is the best. What then do you think about this one? It has nothing to do with blood naa! I can't even laugh! Please leave a comment :)

Rape: The Victim, Society & Breaking the Silence.

One day at lunch, a group of four young men seated by me were having a discussion about a rape video. They chatted so loudly about it I had no problem tuning my ears for better reception. Any ways, even though they had no knowledge of the perpetrator and victim, they spoke as if they did. All except one agreed that the lady deserved what she got and was to be blamed. The lady represented a case study related to their own experiences.

I listened as they bragged about their rape escapades giving counts of the number of girls they'd raped as proofs. Some were hailed for ‘doing’ more than the others. To them, rape is an act of dominance and gaining control over difficult unwilling girls ––  it's used punish and degrade them.
