#OpeEd: Let’s talk about Rape by Joel Oseiga Aleburu; @JoelOseiga.

I woke up planning to write about my weekend trip to Abuja and about how the sole of my shoe removed at a park in the middle of town only to see a tweet by an on air personality blaming rape on indecent dressing on the part of the ladies. I am just mad right now! So why not let’s discuss RAPE! The truth about RAPE is you never know how delicate and sensitive the matter is until someone you love experiences it. The story of the girl that was gang raped by five boys in ABSU made news both nationally and internationally years ago. What was her offence? She insulted one of the boys. We live in a cruel world but the truth is the Nigerian society encourages rape!

You don’t go about blaming rape on a girl that dressed “indecently”! Come to think of it, decent dressing is relative! There is no world known standard for what dresses are decent! The issue shouldn’t be “them rape you! Watin you wear??” Most people who get raped end up wallowing in silence because of the stigmatization attached. Nobody wants to hear her side (Does she even have a side in the first place?) ! Let me share a story I read some time ago.

Is the devil to Blame? by @AbimbolaAbiolaa

(Image curled from www.femmehub.com)

Punch Metro has a post about a recent child rape case.

"The boy named Thompson who lived with his family on Oremeji Street had complained about pains in his anus while his mother identified as Adenike Ejigbo gave him a bath. The boy told his mother the man, Amusa Ganiu lured him to a place where he allegedly penetrated his anus. The mother was said to have raised the alarm after which the matter was reported at Alakuko police division"

So what happened to the suspect?

"The lagos state deputy police public relations officer, ASP Aliyu Giwa confirmed the arrest and according to what a police source told their correspondent the suspect didn't deny the incident, he BLAMED THE DEVIL"

At the start of my read which didn't have the same headline as above, I already suspected this typical shift of blame which is frequently given by rapists and criminals who plead guilty to their crimes with a "but" would spring up. This sick excuse demonstrates again that those who commit child rape are committing crimes which came from the brain and multiple deliberate decisions than a "devil" driven compulsion committed by out of control human beings.

Offenders like Amusa committed these crimes because they want to and are meant to take full responsibility for it.

Blaming the devil is not a valid justification for the crime, rape is rape and it is inexcusable.

#Nigeria: Landlord Defiles Tenant's 10YO Daughter

Rape cases are getting crazier by the day. So we have been reporting cases of father/daughter, uncle/niece and so many others, this is different. It seems landlords now want to join the "league of rapists." This isn't funny anymore. These people have no sense of respect or regard for girls/women. Is it that this man wants to collect his tenancy fee on this girl or what? We just don't understand what is going on. Read more...

We got a report that, a 42-year-old landlord has been arrested by police detectives from Igando Police Station for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old daughter of his tenant, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

The suspect, identified as Taiwo Bakare, who is also an electrician from Oyo State, lured the girl, (name withheld) to his parlour with sweets where he allegedly committed the act.

Video: Sexually Abused Children in Light of Hope Orphanage Cry Out for Justice!

Please click HERE to watch the video

Children in Light of Hope Orphanage are being sexually abused by the Director of the Orphanage (who they call 'Pastor,' but at this point, we don't care!) Mr Atunde. Two children from the orphanage reported that Mr Atunde had sexually abused them for more than 3 years. The man was arrested and the children taken out of the orphanage. The case is presently in court, but it seems like nothing is being done. Barely two weeks after Project Alert, an organization advocating against violence against women and girls, took the girls in their shelter, the Ogun State government returned the girls back to the (abusive) shelter on some baseless reasons. Mr Tunde, who sexually abuses these girls in his orphanage has been granted bail (by who?) and is now punishing these girls for speaking out. This sexual abuser walks free, while the Ogun State Government Ministry of Women Affairs is quite about the case. Project Alert has asked us to help with creating more awareness about the case and we implore you to help us in this fight for JUSTICE! Please join us in screaming out loud on Facebook, Twitter and in the media to ensure that justice is served. Suggestions on plausible tactics to use will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Anonymous Demands Investigation Into Daisy Coleman's Sexual Assault Case

Remember the girl we posted about yesterday, whose family were evicted from their home for reporting a rape case. Read about it HERE. News reaching us is that anonymous –– a loosely associated international network of activists and hacktivists –– have called for an investigation on the case.

Anonymous has turned its many watchful eyes on another small town scandal, this one in Maryville, Mo.

"There's a multitude of anons and angry people alike planning a course of action as we speak for Maryville," said Deric Lostutter, aka RealKYAnonymous, who played an instrumental role in Anonymous' crusade in the Steubenville rape case. "We are watching. Always."

Lostutter also sent The Huffington Post a one-page statement that had been posted online Monday.

#Nigeria: 30YO Bags Three-Month Jail Term over Rape of Minor

I firmly do not support sentencing a sexual offender to a three months jail term. How will this judgement deter others from engaging in raping a girl child? How come murderers get more severe punishment for their acts while rapists get mere punishment? In order to fight rape in our society, we need stringent laws.

A Zone 2 Wuse Magistrates’ Court in Abuja last week, sentenced Seyi Balogun, 30, of Zehidu Village, Lugbe, Abuja, to three months in prison for sexually assaulting a minor.

The Senior Magistrate, Mrs. Grace Adebayo-Eisape, sentenced Balogun without an option of fine.

Adebayo-Sisape condemned the action of the convict and said the sentence was to deter others.

An Ibadan High Court, yesterday, remanded a 35-year-old man, Segun Majeed, in prison over alleged rape.

The prosecutor, Mrs Olumide Ojo, told the court that the defendant allegedly raped a nine-year-old girl on May 29 2012, at the ArmyBarracksPrimary School, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

#Nigeria –– How We Can Bring an End to Child Rape by Victoria Ibiwoye

In line with our hashtag #ReasonstoEndRape discussion on twitter today, one of our members has written some of her views on how rape can be stopped. It's a brilliant idea and I implore you to read it. Feel free to commend her effort by dropping your thoughts in the comment box.

Apart from being a friend to Ayo, I am a great fan of Ayodeji Osowobi's blog and I hope to support her in every way I can :).

I have watched as survivors of rape express their story with so much bitterness and anger and we may never fully understand what goes on after then. To us, it is just another sad story but to them, it is a life altered and only a few live on, others are killed inside by the torture and embarrassment.

#Nigeria –– 39YO Bricklayer Rapes Daughter

Not again! Just recently, we posted about a man having carnal knowledge of his daughters (see the story here), this is another recent case of a man raping his own child? I thought fathers ought to protect their daughters from sexual assaults, why are they the ones now caught in the act? Fathers, don't you have a conscience and the fear of God? This is a call to all the fathers out there, please stop this act and to all the young chaps (the soon to be fathers), please for God sakes be disciplined and have the fear of God.

Barbaric! Father Claims He Had Sex with His Daughters to Save Them from Premature Death

It is appalling when it is being said that a full grown man rapes an innocent girl. What then can we say of a father who believes in some archaic tradition of sleeping with his daughters to prevent premature death. Yes, his very own blood! The shocking revelation is when his wife, the biological mother of these children, asked that he shouldn't be prosecuted as this is a family matter! Mo gbe! Read the full story...
