78 Rape Suspects Arrested by Osun Police in 2013: How Good Is This News?

Yesterday, when Punch reported that last year alone, 78 rape suspects were arrested in Osun State; people felt it was good news. But really, how good is this news? If this alarming statistic was recorded in one state alone (not ignoring cases that were unreported), what would be the total statistics on rape for the whole country? This reaffirms that we have a long path to thread on. Some have argued that Nigeria has a rape culture, while some others have stated that the issue of "rape" is being overflogged. The issue of rape cannot be overemphasised because it's an important issue. The amount of rapists unleashing their madness on girls is on the rise.

This isn't targeted at rubbishing the efforts of the Nigerian Police -- of course they have done an excellent job, but how many of these suspects have been prosecuted? Was justice meted in each case? Has the police department tried to help those victims of rape in cases of medical examination and couselling?

This report importantly serve as a reminder of the amount of girls, who get defiled on a daily basis. Imagine how many minors were defiled by this "inhumane beings." Take a second to think about the scars they have left in the hearts of our little angels.

Man, 23, Held in Prison for Attempting to Rape a Nursing Mother

A 23-year-old man (name withheld) has been remanded by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates court yesterday, for allegedly attempting to rape a nursing mother.

Adebayo Lasisi, the Chief Magistrate, ordered that the accused be remanded in Ilesha Prison, pending ruling on his bail application.

The case was however, adjourned the case to January 14, 2014 for ruling in the bail application of the accused.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Solomon Oladele, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 1 at 9.30 a.m. at Oloja-Ibala Village in Osogbo.

Oladele said that the accused, who is unemployed, attempted to rape the nursing mother as he ambushed her and her baby on the way to the farm.

The accused assaulted the woman and gave her several blows with his fist in an attempt to forcefully have carnal knowledge of her, the prosecutor added.

He noted that when the woman resisted, the accused subsequently hit her with a hammer on the head, thereby inflicting injury on her.

He said that the accused fled when he saw the victim bleeding, pointing out that the offence contravened sections 359, 351 and 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol.11 Laws of Osun 2003. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mr Remegius Ngwu, counsel to the accused, applied for his bail but the prosecution opposed the application on the grounds that he may jump bail.

The prosecution argued that the crime was grievous and could attract a sentence of life imprisonment.

The Nigerian Tribune has reported that the Osun State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old vulcaniser, Ademola Simiyu, of Ile Olode in Ikoyi for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old daughter.

Simiyu, a father of three, allegedly committed the act on Wednesday, October 23, when he woke up the girl at about 12 midnight while she was sleeping with her siblings and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

Osun State is now the reigning state with the most rape cases this year. A report just reached us that, a 26-year-old man, Rafiu Idowu, is being detained by the Osun State Police Command for allegedly killing his 10-year-old cousin, Tawa Bilawu, after he allegedly raped her.

Idowu who confessed to have committed the offence, said the victim lured him into raping her when she paid a visit to him at his family residence at Ile-Ogbo in Ayedire Local Government Area of the state.

An Osogbo chief magistrates’ court on Wednesday ordered the remand of two brothers for abducting and raping a 14-year-old girl.

The brothers, Feyisola Olatunji, 25, and Olabode Olatunji, 28, allegedly conspired and committed the offences on October 12, 2013 at about 9.45 p.m. at the Old Governor’s office area in Osogbo.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Wilson Mereti, told the court that the accused persons committed the offences by kidnapping their victim and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of her.

Feyi Olatunji, a 20-year-old boy, has been arrested by the Police in Ile-Ife for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, for the state Police Command, DSP Folashade Odoro, said in a statement in Osogbo that the suspected rapist was arrested in Ile-Ife after committing the alleged offence.

Odoro said the 14-year-old girl was sent to buy an electrical bulb and food items by her guardian on October 12, when Olatunji dragged her to his mother’s shop at Ogo-Oluwa area of the town and raped her atop a table, then locked her up till the following day.

She said that the state Police Command had launched investigations into the matter and would ensure that justice is done, adding that the suspect would be arraigned in court after completion of investigations on the matter.

A Magistrate court in Osun State has ordered the remanding in prison custody of a 72-year-old man after he was alleged to have raped a 10-year-old girl.

Sunday Fakachuckwu, was ordered to be confined by the court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital over the allegations.

The prosecutor, Insp. Wilson Meriti, told the court that Fakachuckwu, 72, committed the offence on October 10, at about 2 p.m., at Asejire, Apomu in Isokan local government area of Osun.Meriti added that the accused under the pretext of sending the “helpless” girl on an errand, lured her into his room where he unlawfully and indecently had carnal knowledge of her.He said the offence contravened Section 360 of the Criminal Code and Section 31(1) and (2) of Child’s Right Law of Osun 2007.Fakachuckwu pleaded not guilty to the charges.The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, who ordered the remand of the accused, directed his Counsel, Mrs Bose Dada, to file a formal bail application on his behalf.Aluko adjourned the case to November 11, for mention

On October 8, an Osun High Court discharged and acquitted Oba Adebukola Alii, the Alowa of llowa-Ijesa, Osun State, of rape charges.

But the same court lampooned the accused for sexual rascality that brought shame to himself, his family and his kingdom.

The court said the Oba was morally culpable. But by law, he was in the clear: it had insufficient evidence to nail him for rape.

If indeed the law is codified morality, then that “dual” judgment leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

The court lamented the absence, as damning evidence, of stained bed sheets (which the accused would have gleefully surrendered), tom underpants and medical reports confirming forced penetration – and possible bruises – to prove rape.

Alowa of Ilowa-Ijesa in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Adebukola Alli, who had been standing trial over alleged rape of a former National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, Miss Helen Okpara for the past three years, yesterday, left the court premises a free man as Justice Oyejide Falola of an Osun State High Court sitting in Ikirun discharged and acquitted him.

Justice Falola, in his judgment, held that the complainant failed to show to the court bruises as evidence that she was raped, noting that the prosecutor also failed to show to the court her torn clothes as she had claimed in her submissions before the court.
