The United States government is planning new strategies to prevent and respond to violence against women in Nigeria.
At an event to commemorate the #16Days campaign on #ViolenceagainstWomen in Abuja on Tuesday, the Deputy Chief of Missions of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, Maria Brewer, described the rising cases of violence against women globally as worrisome.
In different works of art, students in the Federal Capital Territory depicted what violence against women meant to them, an unusual way adopted by the U.S. to commemorate the 2013 International Day Against Domestic Violence.
“While violence against women is said to be either physical or sexual, it also violates the safety, dignity and human rights of victims,” Brewer pointed out.
She emphasised that the campaign for eliminating violence against women to ensure that they contributed their quota especially at the grassroots was vital.
The United Nations Women Country Representative, Grace Ongile, says the organisation will continue to pursue a society free of violence against women through collaboration with civil society organisations.
Although the elimination of all forms of violence against women may not be achieved in a single day, many experts have however advised that government, international organisations and members of society groups should double their efforts toward achieve a violent free society.
