More Insight on Why Men Rape

Rape perpetrated against women is one of the most violent and heinous crimes that can be committed. It is so prevalent in the United States and has reached epidemic proportions throughout the world.

Rape and sexual assault is so common place in the United States that according to the RAINN Organization (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network), every two minutes, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. This is an alarming figure and gives rise to many questions.

       Why does it occur so frequently? Why do people commit the act? Who is perpetrating rape and               against whom? How can we change it?

The reasons people commit are complex. Men who were interviewed by the website, Feminist.com, said they raped because,

of a sense of sexual entitlement. Other popular motivating factors included a desire to punish women who rejected or angered them, and raping out of boredom.

There are many people who would argue that rape is as old as humanity itself. Dominant males assert themselves over others and become the King of the community or as you can see above, the women have angered them somehow and now must pay.

More often than not, rape and sexual violence is committed by someone close to the victim. 2/3 of reported rape cases are perpetrated by someone the victim knows. The acquaintance could be someone such as a neighbor, relative, teacher, or friend. That means that only 1/3 of the reported rape cases are committed by someone who is unknown to the victim. This close proximity of the rapist to the victim tells us that rape is not so much about sex, but rather, it is about power and violence.

Women and young girls are not at fault. Whoever believes that she deserved it or she had it coming to her for dressing that way is not modern and out of touch with reality.

Men can no more blame women for rape than bears do not shit in the woods. They do and by the same token it is the man’s fault. Therefore, the one’s who have to change are the males in our society. That doesn’t mean that all of us red-blooded America males need to start wearing pink and dressing like metro-sexuals. No. But what it does mean is that we need to further our understanding of the opposite sex. We need to be educated about their needs, our needs, our common desires, and our mutual respect for one another. More over, we need to have some type of mechanism that enables us to deal better with our frustrations - whatever they may be.

In the end, I do not have all the answers and I don’t think that anyone does. However, we do need to look at ourselves and ask the question, Rape – Why? Until then, we will still be a community of barbarians living in the dark ages eating chicken legs with our hands.
